Since 2008, scenes of mikoshi bearers riding on the portable shrines have disappeared from the festival. The Asakusa Shrine Association decided to ban clambering on the mikoshi in 2007 after the incident that a carrying pole was broken by the act in 2006. However, the effort to stop profane acts was not sufficient and seven mikoshi bearers who rode on the mokoshi were arrested by Tokyo Metropolitan Police in 2007. Following the incident, the shrine cancelled the honja mikoshi and miyadashi parades of portable shrines in 2008. |
